In the latter half of the 1990's a sum in excess of $350,000 was bequested by Albert Cuthbert Noonan of Christchurch to the National Foundation for the Deaf Incorporated, 'for the general purpose of the deaf children in the Province of Canterbury'. Purpose of award: Supporting education and development of deaf children in the province of Canterbury.
Selection criteria:
Individual applicants are required to: • be a New Zealand citizen or have permanent residence. • have been living in Canterbury for more than 12 months • be deaf/hard of hearing (hearing loss 60dB or more in better ear) or have an Auditory Processing Discorder (APD)

Additional information: Canterbury is inclusive of South Canterbury, Canterbury and North Canterbury. It is defined as the area of the Waitaki River, south of the Conway River and east of the Southern Alps.
